It was a beautiful day yesterday so I got out the grinder and got to work. Its ready for the cut on the driver side. Just gotta get some 3" tube (which I found a source...just gotta check on one small detail). What I started with. .jpg) Ewwww....not pretty .jpg) Little cutting .jpg) Little grinding .jpg) Little flapping

After some reading, I wanted the cut near the end of the axle. I also wanted 2" of tube on each side of the cut...so, I cut 5" from the flange on the explorer axle due to the neck down on the axle (neck down is about 3" long). Cut the f150 axle 12" from the collar. Cut my 3" tube 5" long for good measure. Hammered the sleve in with a sledge then used the angle finder to make sure the flange was at the same angle. Meaured the vertical of the flange and used a straight edge and got it to hit 90* and 0* and 17" long from the collar to the flange. So far, so good. Now, gotta weld it And drill the axle to 5 on 4.5 oh yeah, pics..... [attachmentid=771] [attachmentid=770] The tape is there to keep the rust from building up on the bare spot where I made the cut. Covered it for painting then made some adjustments and taped it up again. Its about a 1/4" gap with the tube sleeve under it. Just used a good ole fashioned sawzall to make the cuts.

I thought about doing something like this with a sploder axle.. Adding to the short side and using 2 long side axle shafts.. That would make the alxe wider and centered... Looks good ... Keep up the good work... Oh and ..You are setting up the gears??? Am I the only person that doesnt know how to do that?? I gotta spend less time with my sawzall and more time with my dial caliper..

Yup.. but I only had one set of exploder axles and a free f150 axle so I went with what I had Be nice to have two shafts the same length. Only problem with using the driver. explorer shaft on the pass. side of an explder axle is that is only slides the pinion over 1.5"... using the F150 housing and slamming the pass. side from the exploder to the driver side of the 150 moves it 3" cumulative effect (or .75" off center to the driverside) with the same amount of work.

Well, she's welded together. My welder (aka Chuck) retacked it cuz my tack welds were pourous...so he ground them off!! OUTRAGE I just gotta get my camera to work for a few minutes to take some pics. Looks pretty darn good so far. Gotta put the angle finder on it... I put a straight edge on the tube and it looks to be off a tiny weenie little bit (when I say a hair, I mean a hair). But, it looks to be something I can live with. In other words, much better than before
